Florida Builders Win Community Service Award

In recognition of their efforts to provide Jacksonville, FL’s elderly, disabled and disadvantaged citizens with emergency repairs to their houses, the Northeast Florida Builders Association (NEFBA) has received the 2002 Home Builders Care/National Housing Endowment National Project of the Year Award.

Established in late 2001, the association’s program has helped more than 200 local residents, according to NEFBA President Denise Wallace.

Funded by the Duval County Housing Finance Authority, Builders Care’s long-range goal is to eradicate the area’s estimated 45,000-60,000 substandard housing units. The program has concentrated on making homes handicapped accessible; repairing roofs, siding and leaks; painting; general repairs; and installing heating and air conditioning units. The program works closely with city and nonprofit agencies to identify needs in the community.

One Builders Care program, Adopt-a-Grandma, enlisted the help of more than 400 volunteers last May and June to assist the elderly in need. A volunteer army of builders, contractors, community groups, churches and volunteers from the Florida Youth Challenge Academy, Youth Build and the NEFBA student chapter worked on dozens of homes in desperate need of repair.

The award was presented at the International Builders’ Show by Dale Stuard, past president of the National Housing Endowment and a past NAHB president; Bob Simmons, 2002 Public Affairs Committee chairman; and Robert Mitchell, 2000 NAHB president.
