Good Records Avoid OSHA Citations

If an OSHA compliance officer comes to inspect your job site, one of the first things he will ask to review is your injury and illness log. By keeping your recordkeeping up to date and handy, you often can avoid a citation.

This year, OSHA made it easier for you to keep your illness and injury log current by:

  • Establishing one set of criteria for recording both work-related injuries and work-related illnesses
  • Writing the new forms in plain language using a question and answer format
  • Offering flexibility by letting employers computerize injury and illness records
  • Simplifying the counting of days away from work, restricted days and job transfers

OSHA's new recordkeeping requirements continue to provide a partial exemption for employers who had 10 or fewer workers the previous calendar year. However, if you are an employer with 11 or more employees, you need to post the new OSHA 300A Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses.

In addition, your company executive must certify the annual summary, and the log must be posted on the job site through April 30, 2003.
